Unblocking A Toilet or Drain – Fast!

October 31, 2019

Blocked drains are awful. They smell, they make the rooms unusable and are just generally a nightmare. What happens when you end up with a blocked drain or a blocked toilet at an inopportune time? Firstly, we must mention that drain unblocking or a toilet by yourself is never a recommended procedure. Rather call a professional! But if you can’t, here are some handy tips to get that drain or toilet unblocked fast.

Start with The Kitchen Sink

Kitchen sinks deal with a lot of stuff ending up in their drains. Food items, bits of plastic, and all sorts of other junk go down the kitchen sinks drain. So, it is no surprise that they often end up clogged. Fixing them may take a few steps, but here are the easiest ones:

  • Use boiling water: Grease thickens when it gets cold, sticking to the side of the drain. This can cause blockages and end up with other gunk stuck in it. Pouring boiling water down the sink will dissolve any grease that may be lurking there.
  • Check your garbage disposal: If you have a garbage disposal in your sink, it may get blocked too. Before attempting to unblock it, make sure to turn it off and unplug it if you can. Carefully remove any moving parts and clean them with dishwashing liquid and hot water.
  • Vinegar and baking soda: This magic combination cleans everything from silverware to drains. First, remove any standing water. Pour four tablespoons of baking soda down your drain. Follow that with a cup of white vinegar. Watch as it bubbles happily and washes dirt and grime away.
  • Plunger: We all have one of these under the sink. If all of the above has failed, fit your plunger carefully over the sink’s drain. Be sure to block any other interlinked drains, such as a double sink, with a drain plug. Put a small amount of water into the sink. Use the plunger vigorously until the blockage is loose and the water flows. Then use the vinegar step as above to clean the drain.

Blocked Toilets

Blocked toilets are the pits. Literally. Here are a few quick tips to help you unblock your toilet. Please note: the best practice is to call a professional to handle blocked toilets!

  • Plunger: The handy plunger is designed to unblock toilets and drains, so that’s precisely what you should try first. Remove any excess water, leaving just enough in the bottom to help the plunger do its work. Plunge until the blockage is free and water drains easily.
  • Baking soda and vinegar: As mentioned above, baking soda and vinegar are a magic combination that cleans almost everything. Remove as much water as you can.  Mix four tablespoons of baking soda and one cup of white vinegar in a container. Pour this into the toilet. Let the mixture sit for about 5 – 10 minutes and then flush your toilet.
